Malawi Registers 150 New Cases Of Leprosy

Reports reaching this publication indicates that some districts in the country are said to be experiencing the resurgence of Leprosy cases with almost 150 people identified so far.
National Tuberculosis (TB) and Leprosy Programme Coordinator in the Ministry of Health, Dr James Mpunga, disclosed this at a TB and Leprosy Stakeholders Meeting in Mponela on Monday.
“Although Malawi reached an elimination level but cases in some districts have been identified and it is evidenced that the disease still exists in the country,” said Dr. Mpunga.
Malawi achieved elimination threshold for Leprosy in 1994.
Mchinji Director of Health and Social Services, Dr Juliana Kanyengambeta Mubanga, said the district has since recorded close to 50 leprosy cases which she said is a high number of cases reported in a three-year period.
Leprosy is a skin disease caused by mycobacterium leprae. The disease is preventable and treatable but if not attended to, one can lose some parts of the body like fingers.
