Free electricity connections to commence this year

Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Chief Executive Officer, Clement Chinyama has announced that free electricity connections are to roll out by the end of this year.

The current administration promised this during the elections campaign period.

Addressing the media in Lilongwe Kanyama said they have developed a Free Electricity Connections Policy which will guide the process.

Working with the Ministry of Energy, Kanyama said they are now in the process of identifying funds to finance the plans.

He said between 2018 and 2021 Escom received 258 000 power connection applications out of which 163 000 have been completed remaining with 95 000 on the waiting list.

He says out of the 95 0000, they intend to connect 40 000 applicants by June this year and connect the remaining applicants in the next half of the year.
