Biting your nails is kind of gross and it can be quite embarrassing. It’s a habit many of us struggle to quit, and regardless of how bad it looks or how it messes up our nails, we just can’t help it. Your mom has probably always told you that nail biting was a bad habit. And while sticking your fingers in your mouth is not something which is encouraged, it turns out that nail biting might not be all bad, according to a new study published in the Journal of Pediatrics.

If you bite your nails, you’ve probably been on a quest which is difficult to quit. But a new studies show that it actually beneficial in the health department. Scientists found that this bad habit might actually have a health benefit. 

According to the research, which was published in the journal Pediatrics, children who are nail-biters and thumb-suckers are less likely to develop allergies later in life. Researchers found that people who nibbled their nails are less likely to get allergies and have stronger immune systems overall. Nail biting allows bacteria and pollen to be trapped under the fingernails which later get into the mouth and allow the body to combat these bacteria which in turn boosts immunity. Basically, dirty fingernail chewing worked a little like an all-natural (and slightly icky) vaccine. 

On the contrary, the health risks that biting your nails pose is not to be taken lightly. Nails carry all sorts of germs and biting them can increase your risk of infection. Bacteria from the hands to the mouth can cause an infection of the gums, and it can even damage your teeth and fingers. So, it is best to protect yourself by not exposing yourself to germs. However, if you can’t keep your nails out of your mouth, remember to keep your hands clean. 

But if you still want a stronger immune system and who doesn’t? There are plenty of safer and more fun ways to build up good bacteria. Previous research has found that activities like taking a walk outdoors, listening to music, having an optimistic attitude, hanging with friends, laughing, meditating, and eating fermented foods like yogurt are all powerful immune system boosters.
