Mzuzu diocese embarks on improving learning environment

Catholic Diocese of Mzuzu through its Education Department has launched a School Access and Governance Functionality Enhancement (SAGFE) project.

The project is aimed at improving learning environment for vulnerable children in primary schools in five districts in the northern region.

Projects Officer for Mzuzu Diocese, Innocent Nyondo said marginalized learners, girls and children with physical, mental and learning challenges will be included in the project.

“We will distribute wheel chairs, hearing aids, and eye glasses to the targeted audience, we will also construct pit latrines to improve menstrual hygiene, reducing girl learner absenteeism from school,’’ said Nyondo.

According to Nyondo, the ones who dropped out from school due to pregnancies and early marriages will also be targeted.

The three-year project which is sponsored to the tune of £330,000 (four hundred and fifteen million three hundred and fifty eight thousand three hundred and forty eight kwacha) by Misean Cara of Ireland will run up to 2025.

Education Coordinator in the Diocese of Mzuzu, Remmie Kamanga, said the project will benefit a total of 100 primary schools and 800 teachers in 18 parishes of the diocese.

The project is targeting districts including, Mzuzu city, Nkhatabay, Mzimba, Rumphi and part of Kasungu.
