Unclean market worries vendors in Balaka

Vendors in Balaka district have accused the district council for failing to collect garbage in the main market, saying this will help in the increase of cholera cases in the district.

One of the concerned marketers who sell tomato said the council has been lying to them about building concrete bins since 2017, and now they fear the wave of cholera as garbage is being disposed anywhere.

”Although we pay market fees daily, we can’t see any change in terms of hygiene to our market surroundings,” she said.

According to Balaka District Commissioner Darwin Mngoli, the complaint is true but it is a result of the council having only one vehicle used to collects garbage.

Mngoli continued that the council is trying its best to hire extra vehicles to improve collection of the garbage around the town.
