Court revokes bail of ex-wife of Rwandese businessperson Habimana Noel Emily who was poisoned to death last year

The High Court in Lilongwe has revoked bail for Giramata Gentile, the ex-wife of a Lilongwe-based Rwandese businessperson Habimana Noel Emily who was allegedly poisoned in October last year.

Gentile was arrested in January this year after findings of an autopsy showed the mysterious death of Emily was caused by poisoning and not a road accident as it was earlier reported.

High Court Judge Bruno Kalemba who is presiding over the criminal case number 7 of 2023, issued the revocation order on Tuesday under section 124 of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Code.

The court order which Nation Online has seen does not state the grounds for the revocation of Gentile’s bail.

But sources have told Nation Online the ex-wife, who is answering murder charges, was due to fly to the United States of America when immigration officials intercepted her at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe.

Reads the order: “Upon hearing counsel for the State this court hereby revokes the bail granted Giramata Gentile, the accused person herein and further orders that she be committed to prison pending the hearing of her case.”

The 36-year-old businessman died mysteriously on October 17, 2022 in an alleged road accident near Daeyang Luke Hospital junction in Lilongwe but his death raised eye brows with various stakeholders demanding justice to prevail on the matter.

Two separate autopsy reports gave conflicting results on the cause of the death.

After a series of press conferences and protests led by the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (Cdedi) and other concerned citizens demanding justice, the police eventually arrested the ex-wife.
