Education experts have challenged the Ministry of Education’s new directive instructing schools not to send learners back home for failing to wear school uniforms, arguing that the move may create disorder in learning institutions.

This follows a circular signed by the ministry’s Secretary for Education, Ken Ndala, which states that the intention is to promote equal access to education for all learners, including those from economically challenged families.

However, education expert Ben Navitcha says that despite the ministry’s good intentions, the directive may bring significant challenges to school environments.

Navitcha argues that some learners may intentionally start attending classes in different types of clothing, which could cause children from low-income families to feel inferior or out of place.

He added that school uniforms help maintain equality among learners, and removing that requirement risks disrupting that balance.

Navitcha concluded by saying there is a need to find a balanced solution that ensures every learner has access to proper school uniform rather than eliminating the requirement altogether.
