Malawi has been ranked 95th out of 123 countries in the 2025 Global Hunger Index, placing it among nations experiencing serious levels of hunger.

The 20th edition of the report comes at a time of growing global concern over food security, with the goal of ending hunger by 2030 increasingly seen as unlikely.

The Global Hunger Index is a peer-reviewed annual report produced by Concern Worldwide, Welthungerhilfe, and the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict.

Meanwhile, Sarah McCann, Head of Cooperatives at the Ireland Embassy, has urged countries, including Malawi, to take urgent steps to address hunger and build resilient food systems.

At the same time, Bennett Nkasala, Principal Secretary for Administration in the Ministry of Agriculture, acknowledged the food insecurity situation, saying the government is shifting from reliance on rain-fed agriculture to more diversified farming systems.

Key indicators such as undernourishment, child stunting, child wasting, and child mortality remain far from international targets, undermining the right to food and the wellbeing of millions globally.
