The Ministry of Homeland Security has intensified efforts to combat illegal fuel storage, with a major operation in Mangochi District leading to the seizure of more than 4,000 litres of fuel.

In a press statement dated April 26, Minister Peter Mukhito confirmed that the overnight operation was carried out by police following tip-offs from members of the public. Authorities discovered two major storage sites suspected to be part of an organised illegal fuel distribution network.

At the first location, officers confiscated 33 jerry cans, each with a capacity of 20 litres, all filled with fuel. At a second site, police recovered 19 drums, each holding 200 litres. Additional 20-litre containers were also found, bringing the total volume of seized fuel to over 4,000 litres.

“The scale of these recoveries points to an organised and unlawful fuel trade network, which has now been disrupted,” the statement said.

All confiscated fuel has been secured and placed under police custody as investigations continue. A special task force has been deployed to trace the origin of the fuel, identify individuals and businesses involved, and uncover the full extent of the distribution network.

The ministry commended members of the public who provided crucial information leading to the operation, describing their actions as a significant contribution to protecting national resources and reinforcing the rule of law.

“This single act of vigilance has safeguarded national resources and strengthened the rule of law,” the statement added.

The crackdown comes amid growing concern over illegal fuel storage practices, which have been linked to several fatal fire incidents in residential areas. Authorities have warned that such activities not only violate the law but also pose serious safety risks to communities.

The Ministry has since urged the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities, as efforts continue to dismantle illegal fuel networks across the country.
