A 27-year-old primary school teacher in Phalombe, George Makuwira, has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for having sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old learner.

In court, Makuwira pleaded guilty when he appeared before First Grade Magistrate Leonard Mtosa, where it was revealed that he committed the offence on three occasions between January and March 2026 in a maize garden near the school campus.

Child Rights Advocacy Centre Executive Director Memory Chisenga has welcomed the sentence but called for life imprisonment for defilers, saying tougher sentences would deter offenders and protect children.

Child rights campaigner Amos Chibwana has since urged speedy handling of defilement cases, saying delays deny survivors timely justice.
