The Malawi Police Service has arrested nine more suspects in connection with false claims of genital disappearance, bringing the total number of arrests to 14.
National Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Alfred Chimthere, confirmed the latest arrests, saying the alarming reports have caused fear and panic among communities in Nsanje and Chikwawa districts.
According to Chimthere, the nine suspects were arrested for allegedly publishing false information likely to cause fear and public alarm.
“The arrests follow reports made yesterday by the suspects who claimed that their private parts had disappeared after coming into contact with other people,” he said in a statement posted on the Malawi Police Service Facebook page.
Police said the complainants were referred to Nsanje District Hospital for medical examinations, which established that all the individuals’ private parts were intact and that no abnormalities were detected.
Authorities have since warned members of the public against spreading unverified information, stressing that such claims can disrupt public peace and create unnecessary tension in communities.
The police have further assured the public that investigations into the matter are continuing.
