Police in Limbe have arrested a businessman of Asian origin accused of assaulting some of his workers at a goat farm in Mudi, Blantyre.

According to Limbe Police spokesperson Aubrey Singanyama, the suspect has been identified as Asifu Chothiya, aged 40.

The matter came to light after human rights activist Bon Kalindo released a video featuring some of the workers, who alleged that their foreign employer had been physically abusing them without justification and sometimes over issues beyond their control.

The video has widely circulated on social media over the past few days, sparking public outrage.

Singanyama said police later received an official complaint alleging that Chothiya assaulted three workers following disagreements related to work duties, leaving one of them unconscious.

Police say the suspect is expected to answer charges related to causing bodily harm.

Chothiya has already appeared before the Limbe-Dalton Magistrate Court, which ordered that he be remanded at Chichiri Prison pending his next court appearance.
