The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has reaffirmed its decision to proceed with peaceful demonstrations on July 1, demanding urgent rehabilitation of the Karonga–Chiweta Road despite police maintaining that they will not permit protesters to block the route.

HRDC says the demonstrations are intended to highlight the challenges faced by motorists and communities due to the deteriorating condition of the road. However, the Malawi Police Service insists it has a responsibility to keep the road open and ensure the free movement of people and vehicles.

Meanwhile, governance expert Dr. George Chaima has urged HRDC to complement its advocacy efforts by engaging government and other stakeholders to explore practical ways of mobilising resources for the road’s rehabilitation.

With both HRDC and the police standing by their respective positions, attention is now focused on how the planned demonstrations will unfold on July 1.
