Man Arrested for Allegedly Posing as MDF Soldier to Deceive Women in Nkhata Bay

Police in Nkhata Bay have arrested a 31-year-old man, Maxwell Banda, from Chilumba Village, Traditional Authority Ngokwe, Machinga District, for allegedly impersonating a member of the Malawi Defence Force (MDF).

According to Nkhata Bay Police spokesperson Enala Kalua, the suspect allegedly committed the offence in March this year while staying at a lodge in Nkhata Bay, where he reportedly lived for about six months.

Kalua said Banda falsely claimed to be an MDF soldier stationed at Chilumba Barracks with the intention of deceiving two women into entering sexual relationships with him.

Police further allege that the suspect impregnated both women before disappearing to an unknown location. He was eventually tracked down and arrested on 12 July.

Banda is expected to appear before court soon to answer charges related to impersonation and any other offences that may arise from the police investigation.
