Man arrested for impersonating PS and obtaining money by false pretence

Police in Lilongwe are keeping in custody Yotamu Mhango for personating the Principal Secretary (PS) for Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

Lilongwe Police Station Spokesperson Inspector Kingsley Dandaula told the Malawi News Agency (Mana), Monday, that the suspect personated Dr. Ken M’dala, the (PS) between February and March 2017 in Lilongwe and Blantyre.

He said the PS complained about someone who was going around calling people that he was Dr. Ken M’dala and that he would give them some consultancy work for the Ministry.

“The suspect was allegedly targeting Lectures from Universities and other higher learning Institutions and also various Non-governmental Organisations offering them opportunities to do consultancy or research work for the Ministry and demanding money for the offers in exchange.

“The cash was sent through Airtel money, so far four people have lodged complaints against the suspect,” said Dandaula.

The suspect is expected to answer charges of personating an officer employed in the public service and for obtaining money by false pretence.

Mhango 30, who hails from Kafukula village in the area of Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba district is currently remanded at Maula Prison pending further investigations.
