Two people arrested in Rumphi for selling Ivory

Police in Rumphi are keeping in custody two men for being found in possession of ivory.

Rumphi Police Public Relations Officer Victor Khamisi confirmed of the arrest in an interview with the press and identified the two as Dokotala Chavula and Elias Nkhonjera.

According to Khamisi, the police got a tip-off from well-wishers that the two had brought ivory at the trading centre leading to their arrest.

“Upon searching them, the police managed to recovery ivory pieces worthy K5.8 million,” said Khamisi.

The two suspects are yet to appear in court to answer charges of illegal possession of specimen of protected species.

Chavula comes from Mtamila village while Nkhonjera is from Jumbe village, Traditional Authority (TA) Chikulamayembe in Rumphi.
