Heavy Rains a Threat to Agricultural Sector

Food security is expected to be affected due to floods in the southern region which produces about one-third of Malawi’s maize output.

According to Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) report it indicates that despite not having an official data regarding the impacts of floods on the agricultural sector, crop losses are expected to worsen in the affected areas.

“The recent flood in the Sourthen Region, which have affected over 900, 000 people, have further compounded the situation. Losses of food supplies, damages to the soon-to-be harvested 2019 crops and reduced access to markets are likely to aggravate food security,” Reads part of the report.

The report further shows that the average of maize was likely to increase in 2019 with the average of 3.3 million tonnes.

However, Halmiton Chamala, spokesperson of the ministry of Irrigation and Water Development has retaliated Mutharika’s words that no Malawian would die of hunger.
