HRDC wants Malawi on standstill till electoral impasse is resolved

Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) is strategising on how to put Malawi on stand still till an amicable solution to the political impasse is reached, national chairperson Timothy Mtambo said at the end of vigils in Lilongwe Wednesday.

The Coalition has long called for the resignation of Malawi Election Commission chairperson Jane Ansah alleging incompetence in presiding over the May 21st elections but to no avail.

Mtambo told the crowd: “We are saying we see that there is too much playfulness. Therefore, the vigils that we are going to do next will be in all borders of Malawi, we want to close borders so that no one comes in or out. This includes airports.”

He explained these are ideas they are thinking about and when they discuss them they will inform will inform the nation.

Mtambo pointed out that they will write governments and airlines that Malawians have a problem they need to deal so planes should not fly in or out.

He disclosed that he was aware of people that were bringing in money being used to attack Malawians.

“So we will accept to put the country to a standstill until we talk.

“We are very sad people, they can’t be hurting you coming out here every day while they are just there stealing our money, stealing our taxes,” he said.

HRDC has been organising massive demonstrations since the announcement of the May 21 elections.
