Polls Case Resumes Today, Chilima, Mia in Attendance

The Constitutional Court sitting in Lilongwe is today expected to resume hearing the elections case in which the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and United Transformation Movement (UTM) are challenging May 21 presidential election results.

The hearing was expected to start on July 28 but Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) asked the court for a 14 day grace period to collect the relevant documents from its presiding officers across the country.

Following MEC’s prayer, the court gave the electoral body five days to submit the required documents.

Meanwhile MEC indicates that all the required documents have been collected.

The UTM and the MCP are calling for the nullification of the election results citing massive irregularities.
A panel of five high court judges has been hearing the case.

UTM president Saulos Chilima, MCP Vice President Sidik Mia, his wife Abida and MCP Secretary General, Eisenhower Mkaka, have arrived for the Elections Case in Lilongwe.
