Damaged Kyungu Bridge Worries Minister Jacob Hara

Minister of Transport and Public Works Jacob Hara has described Kyungu Bridge perennial challenges as unfortunate, saying the importance of the Karonga-Songwe M1 Road cannot be overemphasised.

The recent incident, according to Roads Authority (RA), involves an approach to the bridge—which has been washed away.

The incident has disrupted cross-border business through Songwe Border, as the road between the border and Kaporo has been closed.

According to the minister, government is working on a lasting solution to challenges related to the bridge.

He said:”It is sad that my office never made any follow-up on the rehabilitation works that took place after a similar incident. However, my technical team will visit the place to assess the situation for a permanent solution.”

A statement from Roads Authority (RA) says a contractor is currently mobilising resources to the site to reinstate the bridge approach.

Kyungu Bridge is at a distance of 6 kilometers from Songwe Border.
