CHRR Speaks against relocation of refugees to Dzaleka camp

One of the country’s human rights body, has spoken against the government’s decision to use the Malawi Police Service (MPS) officers to relocate refugees to Dzaleka camp.

The Ministry of Homeland Security said with the help of the men in uniform, government is planning on moving refugees back to Dzaleka camp.

In a statement, Center for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) while appreciating government decision to relocate the refugees, described the use of the police as uncalled for.

According to CHRR’s Executive Director Michael Kaiyatsa, the ministry is directly putting the refugees at risk of police brutality.

Kaiyatsa added that the people deserve a little compassion and empathy considering the fact that they are already subjected to unfavorable environment in their home countries.

CHRR has therefore opposed to government’s decision to use force in relocating the refugees.

Government is yet to respond to the concerns.
