Man slapped with 48 months for stealing metal equipment for EGENCO

Liwonde First Grade Magistrate Chrispine Sachuluka has sentenced 22-year-old Henry Chazunga to 48 months imprisonment, for theft of metal equipment which Egenco mounted along the Shire River to traps weeds.
The equipment which has not been recovered includes bolts, nuts and metal plates valued at K13 million.
In his sentence, Sachuluka said the matter was serious in nature considering the act had the potential to allow weeds to reach Nkula Hydro Electric Power Plant and disrupt power supply.
Prosecutor Wakisa Mwakatika said the state paraded four witness who told the court Sachuluka sold the equipment to scrap metal dealers.
In an interview, Egenco Assistant Public Relations officer, Mervin Mchenga said they are losing lots of money to replace stolen property which affects power generation.
