Sand festival ‘phone thief’ arrested, 20 phones recovered

Police in Mangochi are keeping in custody a man who was arrested during the just ended Sand Music Festival for allegedly being behind a spate of stolen phones at the event.

The Police say so far over 20 mobile phones have been recovered from the suspected thief, whose particulars the Police say cannot reveal for now as investigations are ongoing.

In an interview, Mangochi Police Public Relations Officer Amina Tepani Daudi said the person who has been arrested has accomplices who are yet to be arrested.

“The Criminal Investigation Department team has taken him for further recoveries. As soon as that exercise is done we will furnish you with additional details,” she said.

Organisers of the event, Impakt Events Management through its director Lucius Banda described the arrest as a milestone.

“The event had its positives and negatives and for us the arrest of this man is a positive. Those who lost their phones should get in touch with the Police,” said Banda.

The Sand Music Festival took place at Sunbird Nkopola in Mangochi from Friday last week to Sunday evening.
