Malawians Mourn Atoht Manje

The music community in Malawi and beyond is mourning the untimely death of Atoht Manje, a talented musician who was found dead in his car shortly after a performance at the University of Livingstonia in the northern part of Malawi on August 7, 2023.

The news of his passing has led to an outpouring of grief and speculation on various online platforms.

One prominent thread of conversation on social media and online forums revolves around allegations that Atoht Manje may have been targeted and killed by satanic gurus.

These claims, however, are largely based on rumors and lack substantial evidence. The Malawian online community remains divided on the validity of these allegations, with some urging caution in accepting such unverified claims.

Conversely, another narrative gaining traction online suggests that the musician had been facing health challenges, particularly related to lung problems. Supporters of this theory argue that his health issues might have played a role in his sudden demise.

However, it’s essential to note that, as of now, no official statement from authorities has confirmed the cause of death.

In the wake of Atot Manje’s passing, social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter have been inundated with heartfelt tributes, condolences, and discussions about his contributions to Malawian music.

Fans, fellow artists, and admirers have shared their favorite songs, memories, and thoughts on his impact on the music industry.

Local media outlets have been actively covering the story, conducting interviews with those who knew Atot Manje personally. These interviews provide insights into the artist’s life and his significance within the music community.

Malawi’s celebrated hip-hop star Tay Grin, real name Limbani Kalilani said: “It’s taken me a while to grasp this situation & I still haven’t come to terms with it. It’s quite painful

“The first & last time we met was at Bingu National Stadium at an event we both performed. Immediately after the event you posted this beautiful message on your page. You always spoke your mind and the one thing that drew us close was the abundant love we both clearly have for our culture. I took this screen shot that day sent it to you, called you and thanked you for the profound words while conveying my admiration for your art and that we needed to work harder to promote and preserve our culture through our music.”

He added: “I have painfully learnt that we do not have all the time in the world, get things done as soon as you can and not wait for later. However, we have been blessed and touched by your great talent and we shall soldier on and endeavor to become the one thing you loved seeing and looked up to;

“Munthu amene sachita manyazi ndi chikhalidwe chakwawo automatically becomes my model”

“Thank you for your outstanding contribution in promoting and preserving our culture .”

On his part Saint, real name Yamikani Chikwawe wrote: “We embarked on a journey to Livingstonia, brimming with hope and joy, sharing advice, tales, and laughter. Your performance was electrifying, setting the stage ablaze. Exhausted, you threw onto a chair backstage,

“Dada popita pa stage mutenge madzi chifukwa nde pakuotcha”

He added: “But alas, life’s cruel hand has left me speechless. I received the devastating news, and I hurried to your side, only to find you devoid of life.

“The hardest 24hrs of my life.”

Meanwhile, the body of Atoht Manje was laid to rest on Monday in Mangochi.
