Suspected Gang Member Nabbed After Violent Robbery in Lilongwe

Police in Lilongwe have arrested a 51 year-old man, Joseph Chisale, for his suspected involvement in an armed robbery that occurred on May 13, 2025, at around 8 PM in Chitedze.

Lilongwe Police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu, has confimerd the arres and said Chisale is believed to have been part of a five-man gang that robbed a man of his Toyota Axio vehicle, a laptop, a mobile phone, and K80,000 in cash.

The suspects were reportedly armed with machetes and used violence during the robbery.

Following a report filed by the victim, police launched an investigation and managed to arrest Chisale at his home.

“Officers also recovered the stolen vehicle at the scene. Inside the car, police found machetes and face masks, which they believe were used during the attack”, said Chigalu.

Chigalu added that Chisale confessed to using the same vehicle with his accomplices to rob another man of K1.8 million in Area 25.

Chisale hails from Mutu Village, Traditional Authority Mtema, in Lilongwe District. Police are currently pursuing the remaining four suspects who are still at large.

The suspect is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges related to armed robbery.
