Police in Mzuzu have arrested a 29-year-old woman, Tionge Nyirenda, for allegedly conspiring with Blessings Ibrahim to abduct her own seven-year-old child and demand a ransom of K150,000.

According to Mzuzu Police, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, at Bwanali in Ekwendeni, Mzimba North.

Nyirenda initially reported to Ekwendeni Police Post that her child had gone missing. She later told officers that unknown individuals had contacted her using an Airtel number, demanding K150,000 for the child’s release. A subsequent call allegedly raised the ransom to K500,000.

Following investigations, detectives arrested Ibrahim at Ekwendeni Trading Centre. The child was later rescued and found in good health.

During questioning, Ibrahim reportedly confessed that he had connived with Nyirenda, who is the child’s biological mother, to extort money from her husband.

The two allegedly planned to share the ransom equally.

Mzuzu Police public relations officer Cecilia Mfune said the suspects will appear in court once documentation is complete to answer a charge of abduction.

Nyirenda hails from Gwanjawire Village, Traditional Authority Mthwalo in Mzimba, while Ibrahim is from Wasoliwa Village, Traditional Authority Nkholondiwe in Mangochi.
