President Arthur Peter Mutharika has appointed a new cohort of members to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), in accordance with Section 117 of the Constitution.

The announcement was made by Secretary to the Office of the President and Cabinet, Justin Said, who confirmed that the appointments are aimed at strengthening the oversight and administration of the judiciary.

The newly constituted Commission will be chaired by the Chief Justice, as mandated by law.

Among the appointed judicial officers are Ophrah Dorothy Kamanga, a Justice of the Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal, and Violet Palikena Chipao, a Judge of the High Court. Also appointed is Senior Resident Magistrate Ellen Chapita.

The Commission further includes Edith Chikagwa, legal academic Patrice Hanif, as well as Chikosa Banda, Tabiya Hanif, and rights activist Victor Chagunyuka Mhango.

The Judicial Service Commission is a constitutional body tasked with regulating judicial officers, overseeing appointments, and handling disciplinary matters within the judiciary.

The new appointments are expected to play a key role in maintaining professionalism, accountability, and integrity across Malawi’s judicial system.
