Drunk Man Drowns While Crossing Stream in Chitipa

A 43-year-old man, Joseph Mwamphachi, has died after drowning in Hanga Stream at Navitengo Village under Senior Chief Kameme in Chitipa District.
According to Chitipa Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Mathews Mfune, the incident happened as the deceased was returning home from a beer-drinking spree at Navitengo Trading Centre on the night of Wednesday, May 13, 2026.
Mfune explained that Mwamphachi attempted to cross a wooden bridge while intoxicated but lost his footing and fell into the stream.
Community members discovered his body floating in the water on Thursday morning and immediately alerted police officers.
Police later retrieved the body and ruled the cause of death as drowning.
