Police in Lilongwe have arrested two men for allegedly using forged cheques bearing names of Ntcheu District Council and Thyolo District Council to purchase assorted stationery worth K48 million from Central Government Stores.
Hastings Chigalu identified the suspects as Reuben Nzandu, 42, and Joseph Phiri, 50.
According to Chigalu, investigations revealed that on April 28, 2026, the suspects allegedly pretended to be employees of Ntcheu District Council and purchased stationery worth K20.4 million from Central Government Stores in Area 4, Lilongwe.
Police say the suspects used a cheque purportedly issued by National Bank of Malawi on behalf of Ntcheu District Council, but the cheque was later rejected after the bank discovered irregularities in the account details.
By the time the cheque was declined, the suspects had already collected the goods and allegedly provided fake phone numbers.
Police have since recovered the stationery from Biwi and City Centre in Lilongwe. The recovered items are believed to have been fraudulently obtained from Central Government Stores offices in both Lilongwe and Blantyre.
