At least 10 people have been arrested in Lunzu, Blantyre, following a joint operation by Chileka Police and ESCOM targeting theft and vandalism of electricity infrastructure.

According to Chileka Police Station Deputy Public Relations Officer Sergeant Florence Chitseka Chikhula, the intelligence-led operation involved searches of scrap yards and other suspected locations.

Police say they recovered various items believed to have been made from stolen power line cables, including aluminium pots, lids, knives, spanners, and spoons.

Chikhula said the suspects have been charged with vandalism, while investigations are continuing to identify and arrest individuals supplying stolen aluminium wires.

ESCOM Southern Region Security Officer Ishmael John condemned the continued vandalism of power infrastructure, saying it contributes to prolonged blackouts and operational challenges.

Authorities say more operations will continue as part of efforts to protect public infrastructure and ensure reliable electricity supply.
