Truck drivers down tools

Truck drivers in Lilongwe have started a strike against what they call unfair treatment from both government and their employers.

They have blocked the M1 road at Kanengo where no heavy-duty vehicle is being allowed to pass.

Among their grievances, they say they do not want to be regarded as labourers but permanent employees, adding that some of them are still getting as low as K25,000 per month as wages.

Professional Drivers Chairperson Union, Major Mkandawire has told the press that the strike is nationwide and they will continue with the strike until authorities intervene.

The strike has the potential of affecting the in-floor of fuel and other essential goods in the country hence putting Malawians underpanic.

Effort to talk to government spokesperson Gospel Kazako proved futile.
