A Malawian citizen based in the United Kingdom, has paid K150,000 to secure the release of 24-year-old after he failed to raise the fine imposed by the court.

Mtonyo was convicted by the Nkhunga Second Grade Magistrate’s Court on charges of being found in possession of a police uniform and committing robbery in the Dwangwa area. The court ordered him to pay K100,000 for the uniform-related offence and K50,000 for robbery or serve a nine-month prison sentence.

According to a charity worker who requested anonymity, the decision to assist came after reading about the case. The donor said that although Mtonyo was found guilty, everyone deserves a second chance.

Nkhunga Police spokesperson Andrew Kamanga confirmed that Mtonyo, who comes from Chiwanje Village under Traditional Authority Ganya in Ntcheu District, has since been released.

He had been expected to serve his sentence at Nkhotakota Prison.
