15 Fined Over Illegal Gold Mining; Mozambicans Face Deportation

The Lilongwe First Grade Magistrate’s Court has fined 15 individuals K300,000 each for engaging in illegal gold mining at the Nanjiri and Matapila sites.
The group, comprising seven Mozambican men, five Malawian women, and three Malawian men aged between 22 and 68, was arrested on April 7 and 8 during “Operation Samala M’godi,” conducted by police and MDF officers.
In addition, the court ordered the seven Mozambican nationals to pay an extra K50,000 each for illegal entry, bringing their total fines to K350,000 per person.
The court also ordered their deportation.
