The Senior Magistrate’s Court in Mchinji has sentenced MacBisius Zuze, a senior teacher at Home of Hope School, to 21 years in prison with hard labour for defiling a 15-year-old girl.

The court heard through State Prosecutor John Botoman that the convict committed the offense in January this year.

It was established that Zuze summoned the victim to his office at the school, where he proceeded to sexually assault her.

Appearing before the court, Zuze pleaded not guilty to the charges. This prompted the state to parade five witnesses and present a medical report from the hospital, which confirmed that the minor had indeed been defiled.

Despite the overwhelming evidence, Zuze asked the court for leniency when given a chance to mitigate.

However, while delivering the judgment, Senior Magistrate Godfrey Nyirenda dismissed the plea for a lighter sentence. Nyirenda emphasized that a 21-year sentence was appropriate to serve as a stern warning to others who might harbor similar criminal intentions.

“The convict held a position of trust as a senior teacher, and such a sentence is necessary to deter others from committing such heinous acts against children,” the Magistrate noted.
