A 30-year-old man is being sought by police after he allegedly killed his wife and their one-year-old son in Mphita Village under Senior Chief Mpherembe in Mzimba District.

Kafukule Police Station spokesperson Thomas Jemitala identified the suspect as Levi Mkandawire, who is currently on the run.

According to Jemitala, Mkandawire had previously told his wife that he intended to kill their son for ritual purposes in order to become wealthy. The wife reportedly informed her mother about the alleged threat.

On Wednesday, Mkandawire allegedly went to his parents’ home and told them that something was wrong at his house. His parents then went to check and found the woman and the child dead.

A postmortem conducted by health personnel at Mbalachanda Health Centre established that the woman died from strangulation, while the child sustained fatal severe head injuries.

Police have since launched a manhunt for Mkandawire and say investigations into the incident are continuing.
