BURIAL OF SATA UNDERWAY IN ZAMBIA

The funeral of late Zambian President Michael Sata is being held today in the capital Lusaka after a week of lying in state.

Yesterday, diplomats and politicians, including the country’s founding president Kenneth Kaunda and Sata’s predecessor Rupiah Banda joined thousands of Zambians at parliament for a final service led by clerics from different faith groups.

In his remarks, Bishop Alick Banda called on the country’s new leader – Guy Scott – to fulfill Sata’s wish of enacting a new constitution, a process which has been marked by delays.

The 77-year-old leader died on October 28 in a London hospital while undergoing treatment for an undisclosed illness.

Sata – the second sitting Zambian president to die in office after Levy Mwanawasa in 2008 – had promised to deliver a new draft in the run up to his election in 2011.
