Road Accident Claims Life Of A Man In Blantyre

A 36 year old man identified as Jackson Potani died in a road accident which happened at around 5 o’clock in the evening at Chigumula Church in Limbe on April 28, 2024.

Potani was riding an unregistered Lifo motorcycle from Limbe township en-route to Bvumbwe when he hit the back of a Nissan Vannet, registration number NE 7145 at Chigumula church which was also coming from the same direction.

The Vannet was being being driven by Allan Nkonde, 31.

The victim was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) where he was pronounced dead before receiving treatment.

Potani hailed from Wisiki village, Traditional Authority Machinjiri in Blantyre.

Meanwhile, the Police urges all road users including motorists to avoid accidents by always observing speed limits, maintaining safe distance and adhering to road traffic regulations when using the road.

Primary School teacher arrested for defilement

Police in Ntchisi have arrested a Primary School teacher for allegedly defiling a 15 year old girl.

Ntchisi police spokesperson Salomy Zgambo, has confirmed the development saying the suspect teaches at Chamndulu primary school in the district.

“The issue was reported to police by the school authorities” said Zgambo.

The suspect has been identified as Glad Banda and his 34 years old.

Government to spend K24 billion on the construction of the Kenyata and Mzimba

Minister of Transport Jacob Hara said government is expected to spend K24 billion on the construction of the Kenyata and Mzimba Street roads in Lilongwe following a review of projects cost due to the recent devaluation of Malawi.

Hara was saying this today during a tour to appreciate progress of the roads construction in the city.

He said government will spend K35 billion kwacha on the construction of Kenyata road whose initial cost was K19 billion kwacha.

“The construction of the Mzimba street will now cost K17 billion from the initial K9 billion, taking the total cost of the two projects to K52 billion from K28 billion.” Said Hara.

Hara concluded that this follows a review of the projects cost as a result of the 44 percent devaluation of kwacha which resulted into an increase in the prices of construction materials. He however expressed hope that the final products will be of high quality.

Engineer Paul Kulemeka consultant for the two projects, has assured the Minister that both projects will be complete by end of December this year.

 

 

Five arrested on allegations that they stoned to death Grace Chilemba

Five suspects in Ntchisi have been arrested on allegation that they stoned to death Grace Chilemba over witchcraft accusations.

District Police publicist Salomy Zgambo identified the suspects as Feston Chitsamba, Kachaje Chimera, William Bredala, Christina Chibade and Misonzi Bredala.

“Grace’s husband died suddenly early this year, after burial, people from the husband’s side started accusing the wife of witchcraft that she’s the one that killed her husband.

Zgambo said that the suspects stormed the house of Grace on 19 January and stoned her to death before dragging her body which they later dumped into the river.

“The suspects are expected to appear in court to answer murder charges.” Said Zgambo.

Zambia President Hakainde Hichilema on Sunday took to social media to celebrate the Centenary Birthday Commemorations of the First President of the Republic of Zambia Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda.

Kaunda would have turned 100 this year.

Hakainde Hichileman wrote: “KK will remain a global icon who contributed to the liberation of many nations not only on the African continent but also globally.

“Back home, we will continue to honour KK through various policies among them, the reintroduction of free education which he also believed in.”

He added: “President Kaunda demonstrated that there is more that unites us than what divides us.”

Kenneth Kaunda championed freedom, equality, and social justice.

The main event will be celebrated together during commemoration of Zambia’s 60th anniversary of Independence on 24 October, 2024.

Dr. Kaunda, fondly called KK died on 17th June, 2021 aged 97.

DPP Cautions Government On Passports Issue With E-Tech System

The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is pushing the government to furnish Malawians with information on passport contract with E-tech Systems.

In a press statement signed by the party spokesperson Shadreck Namalomba, the DPP alleges that E-tech System is connected to members of the governing Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and cannot print passports for thousands of Malawians.

The former ruling party believes the procedures for awarding the contract to the said company were flouted and warns that if the government does not disclose to Malawians how the contract was arrived at, they will launch an independent inquiry.

Canoe capsizes in Shire River, three people from Neno feared dead

Published reports are indicating that a canoe carrying three people from Neno district has capsized in Shire River.

It is said that the boat was crossing the river from Matope area to Mdeka with the trio onboard and two motorcycles.

The three are currently feared dead.

The law enforcers are yet to comment on the matter.

MCP still adamant in blocking new members from contesting at elective conference

The ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has maintained its earlier stand that new members joining that will not be allowed to contest in the elective conference scheduled for August this year.

MCP’s National Publicity Secretary Ezekiel Peter Ching’oma has said this in a statement released today made available to this publication.

According to Ching’oma, for anyone to be allowed to contest at the elective conference he/she must have been a member of MCP for two years.

“To be eligible for nomination to the National Executive Committee (NEC), a person must meet certain criteria. They must have been a member of Malawi Congress Party for a minimum of two years, demonstrating their commitment and dedication to the party’s value and goals, “reads part of the statement.

Many people have described the stand as a ploy by some MCP top officials to protect their seats in the National Executive Committee (NEC).

Some went further to claim that the decision is targeting Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba who is vying for the top post in the executive committee of the party.

Lawyer Stanley Chirwa arrested over stolen vehicle

Information reaching this publication indicates that lawyer Stanley Chirwa has been arrested in the capital Lilongwe for allegedly possessing a vehicle suspected to have been stolen in South Africa.

National Police Spokesperson Peter Kalaya has confirmed of the development, saying Chirwa was found with a Ford Ranger suspected to have been stolen at gunpoint in South Africa in 2018.

Chirwa spent the weekend in police cell.

ILLOVO COMPANY TO NOMALISE THE SUPPLY OF SUGAR IN NEXT TWO WEEKS

Illovo Malawi Plc says will normalize the supply of sugar within the next two weeks after they have resumed the production of sugar last week.

Speaking in an interview, Managing Director Lekani Katandula said the dispatches of sugar for the local markets has started last week following the announcement they made that sugar production has resumed in all factories, Nchalo and Dwangwa.

“Am expecting that Malawi will be supplied with more sugar in all markets and we would like to see those excessive prices coming down to our recommended prices and of course, the production is a bit slowly but we hoping that within the next two weeks everything will be intact,” he said.

He further pointed out that, the company will also make sure that the international markets will be supplied with more sugar for foreign exchange and their financial obligations.

The prices of sugar were high in some parts of the countries due to shortage of sugar in the country as people were buying and selling K3500 per one kilogram.

Recently the company adjusted up the prices of sugar from K1950 to K 2300.

MAC ORGANISES A FREE OF CHARGE SURGICAL CAMP AT QECH

Medics Across Continents (MAC) in collaboration with Islamic Health Association of Malawi has organized a surgical camp to assist patients who have the issues of urinary system, kidney failure and Fistula without any charges at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.

Speaking in an interview with Chairman for Mac, Martin Sherriff said the development has come for Malawians who have problems of kidney failure, urinary system and Fistula and they cannot afford to go abroad for treatment.

“Am urging all Malawians to come for free surgical treatment which will from 29th April to 3rd May 2024 at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre,” he said

Meanwhile, QECH Director responsible for clinical services Shaffi Mdala said the country has few people who are experts in Fistula and other surgical issues and this is an opportunity for Malawians to get the treatment.

“We believe that, after the camp patients will benefit a lot and also, our doctors will learn new skills from these foreign senior doctors.” he said.
