President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has commended the Chinese government for its continued commitment to support Malawi government in various ways.
Mutharika said this on Thursday at Kamuzu Palace when he met Chinese Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Zang Ming.
During the meeting , the two leader discussed wide range issues relating to the two countries’ bi-lateral relations . China through its Vice Minister gave Malawi government money amounting to $25 million to support various sectors in the country including Education. Out of this, $17 million is a grant while $8.5 million is a concession loan.
In his speech Mutharika said: “China has been Malawi’s partner for the past seven years and during this time, five major projects including the new Parliament building and the Malawi University of Science and Technology, have been undertaken.
“China is also making a commitment to continue supporting Malawi through agriculture, education, infrastructure and skills development”.
Speaking on trade and investment, the President said the two governments have managed to increase trade from 40 million in 2007 to about $200 million.
On his part, Mr. Zang Ming said his government will continue to strengthen its bi-lateral relationship with Malawi through exchange visits.
