Lecturers at the University of Malawi (UNIMA) formerly Chancellor College in Zomba have taken to the streets against the Labour Relations Amendment Bill which was passed by Parliament last week.

Despite President Lazarus Chakwera agreeing not to assent to the amended law, the lecturers believe the President wants to play a hide and seek game on the issue.

Among notable demonstrators include law lecturers Professors Edge and Ngeyi Kanyongolo, Professor Galton Kamchedzera and Dr Sunduzwayo Madise.

The amended bill allows employees to go on strike only three days in a year if they have grievances with their employer.

Malawi Congress of Trade Union (MCTU) was also scheduled to hold demonstrations across the country but the demonstrations were cancelled at the 11th hour.

The cancellation followed Chakwera’s refusal to assent into law the said bill.

Malawians are against the bill.
