KARONGA WATER PROJECT CRUCIAL IN FIGHTING CHOLERA

Northern Region Water Boards (NRWB) will soon supply potable water in Karonga Town to improve health and sanitation due to the cholera outbreak in the district.

Once completed, NRWB will increase access of water to a population of 184,000 people in the district.

Minister of water and sanitation Abida Mia urged communities to get connected to the system for them have easy access to portable water as soon as the works are completed so that they should not be victims of the outbreak.

Mia said cholera cases in this district will decrease, and health water will soon be distributed to everyone in this district.

NRWB Director of Operations, Engineer Dr Asumani Ungwe said besides Covid-19, the project underwent redesigning due to bad soil formation at Gannet Holliday, where expansion of the treatment plant is underway.

The project is has upgraded the current 12.8 million liters to around 30.8 million liters of daily production and a total of 185 kilometers from the current 28.3 kilometers of transmission lines and of distribution lines.

The project will install 5,000 new water connections and construct 50 communal water points.

The project is being sponsored by Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), OPEC Fund and Malawi Government.
