A newly formed of concerned citizen group called “Mbadwa Zokhudzidwa” has raised their concerns over what it says is abuse of social media by some groups, which are spreading insensitive propaganda and mud-smearing campaigns.
Spokesperson for the group Thokozani Banda has said that using fake news is dangerous, especially during this period when various political parties are going to hold elective conferences and the country is going towards elections.
Banda has referred “Bakili Muluzi TV and Limpopo FM” on Facebook as some of the social media pages being used in such propaganda campaigns.
Jimmy Kainja a Senior lecturer in Media Communications at the University of Malawi, says sharing false information, whether on social media or traditional media, has the potential to mislead people during elections and can result into serious consequences.
