The Midima First Grade Magistrate’s Court in Blantyre has convicted and sentenced Veronica Chakhumbira, 34, to pay K30, 000 fine for calling a fellow woman a witch on social media.
According to the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Limbe Police Station, Sub Inspector Chibisa Mulimbika says, the court heard through state Prosecutor, Sergeant Henry Chinyamula, that Chakhumbira in March, 2024, called the victim a witch on her facebook page who upon noticing the insult reported the matter at Bangwe Police Sub Station.
In her mitigation, Chakhumbira asked for a lighter sentence begging that she was a first offender.
Veronica Chakhumbira hails from Nkhanyanga Village Traditional Authority Changata in Thyolo district.
