Following the Monday night fire that gutted Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Warehouse in Lilongwe and in the process destroying the disputed votes for Lilongwe South East Constituency, certain nongovernmental organization have come in the open and call for by-election in the constituency to ensure justice.

The two nongovernmental organization disclosed this through a joint statement made available to all media houses in the country, and these organizations are CHRR and CEDEP.

“Holding bye-elections-as being suggested by some quarters- is the best democratic solution to the current mess.

“We at CHRR and CEDEP will have no moral grounds to object to that as long as such a decision is arrived at after a careful, sober close examination of the status quo.” reads the statement in part.

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidate Ulemu Msungama is challenging Democratic Progressive Party winner Bentry Namasasu who got an Injunction restraining (MEC) to conduct vote recount as granted by the High Court in three polling centres.

Meanwhile the way forward on the matter will be known today as both parties are expected to meet in Court for hearing.
