Nacala Logistics, a consortium of Central and Eastern Africa Railways (Cear) and Vale, have donated items worth K398 million to the government to help towards the fight against Covid-19.

The items include Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and testing kits.

Nacala Logistics Director, Gustavo Stein, said the firm made the donation to help as part of its corporate social responsibility.

He said due to spread of the virus, the firm has lost over 35 percent in business in April alone.

“Last month we had planned to transport more than 50 thousand tons but we had just transported 30 thousand tons losing about 35 percent of business,” Stein added.

Stein said this is because many companies and individuals have cancelled cargo transportation through their trains amid strict travelling restrictions across the globe.

“We are facing a big problem because we are not able to transport cargo from one country to the other thereby losing money in the process,” Stein said.

Minister of Health, Jappie Mhango, thanked the firm for the support.

“The fight against coronavirus is multi-sectoral and for us to win we will need support from citizens and partners,” Mhango explained.
