A stray elephant from Kasungu national park has, this morning, killed a man at Kalanga in the area of Sub Chief Nthunduwala in Kasungu.

An eye witness, Jefule Chipeni, has told us that the man identified as John Kondiko, was trampled upon when he wanted to see a herd of elephant which got out of the park.

Director of the Department of Parks and Wildlife, Brighton Kumchedwa, says the department regrets the incident and has deployed rangers to drive back the elephants.

This is a the third incident in which a person has lost a life due to human wildlife conflict since the department of parks translocated over 260 elephants from Liwonde to Kasungu recently.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare has committed to construct an additional 20 kilometre electric fence along the park to reduce human-wild life conflict.
