Malawians visiting the UK will now be expected to undergo a tuberculosis screening.

The initiative will start on July 1 in 67 countries, including Malawi, Deputy British high commissioner in Malawi Kirk Hollingsworth said in a statement.

Hollingsworth said the project follows figures of high TB prevalence rate in the countries as estimated by the World Health Organisation.

Those involved would be all individuals in Malawi who are applying for a UK visa which is longer than six months including those applying for a Tier 4 student visa.

The process will require individuals to be screened and obtain a certificate from an approved International Organisation for Migration health centre in Malawi to show that they are free of TB.

The TB certificate will be required during their visa application.
